A Knowledge Discovery Platform for STEM Education

The workshop aims to introduce the XColony Knowledge Discovery Kit (KDK) -- a teaching platform based on geometric manipulatives and designed in the STEM education context for training creativity and spatial intelligence in primary and middle school students. The KDK educational platform is presented through a series of applications in teaching domain decomposition and packing that involve manipulatives, hands-on “learn-and-play” and puzzle solving activities. Students engaged in KDK programs integrate visual and kinesthetic information to experiment, learn and predict real world states. The proposed teaching platform was implemented into a one scholar year educational program for fifth graders and tested in a case-control study. We found that the program induces remarkably positive effects in learning geometry and leads to 17% improvement in comprehension, problem solving and reasoning.
